Mets to hire John Gibbons as bench coach: source

John Gibbons’ career in professional baseball began when he was drafted by the Mets in 1980. Now. He’s set to return as the bench coach.

A source confirmed that the former Toronto Blue Jays manager will be the Mets’ next bench coach. With the hiring of rookie manager Carlos Mendoza, the club sought veteran managerial experience in a bench coach. Gibbons checks that box, having managed the Blue Jays twice, from 2004-2008 and then again from 2013-2018.

The 61-year-old Gibbons will have plenty of knowledge to pass off to Mendoza in the dugout. He led the Blue Jays to the ALCS in 2015 and 2016 and became a well-liked figure in the Toronto area. The team was never ever to capitalize on their championship window with Gibbons at the helm and he was replaced fired at the conclusion of the 2018 season.

But his firing did little to diminish his popularity. The mayor of Toronto declared the day he was fired as “John Gibbons Day” to thank him for his contributions to Canada’s only big league team.

Gibbons played 18 games in the big leagues, all of which came with the Mets (10 in 1984, eight with 1986 World Series team). The former catcher then started his coaching career with the Amazins’ as well, working as a roving hitting instructor before managing at various levels in the system. He then went to the Blue Jays as a bullpen catcher, hired by his former roommate in the Mets’ system, J.P. Ricciardi. The former Toronto manager was also an executive in the Mets front office under Sandy Alderson and was briefly part of the interim GM trio after Alderson stepped down for health reasons in 2018.

But Ricciardi is now with the San Francisco Giants. Gibbons doesn’t appear to have any current ties to the Mets. Nearly two months into his tenure as the general manager, Stearns has shown that he doesn’t always go the expected routes.

With the hiring of Gibbons, much of the staff is now in place for the 2024 season.
