American flight attendant accused of filming teen in bathroom

American Airlines is facing a lawsuit from the family of a North Carolina teenager, alleging that a flight attendant taped an iPhone to an airplane toilet to record her when she entered the bathroom on a flight in September.

Attorneys representing the 14-year-old and her parents claim American Airlines “knew or should have known the flight attendant was a danger,” and that he was able to destroy the evidence because of the crew’s failure to confiscate his phone after the fact.

The family is now seeking damages, claiming their daughter is undergoing therapy to help her deal with the traumatic experience, according to the lawsuit filed Friday.

“We take this matter very seriously and have been fully cooperating with law enforcement in their investigation, as safety and security are our highest priorities,” the airline said in a statement.

American added that the flight attendant accused has not worked for the company since he was “withheld from service” immediately following the incident.

According to court documents, the 14-year-old was flying from Charlotte to Boston on Sept. 2, when she got up to use the restroom and was directed by the flight attendant to use a different one in first-class.

Prior to her entering, the flight attendant allegedly entered the restroom himself, saying that he needed to wash his hands. He later exited and told the girl the toilet seat was broken but not to worry about it.

The girl then entered and used the toilet, only to discover afterwards what appeared to be an iPhone with its camera flash engaged, fixed to the seat and partially hidden by red tape.

“Shocked and scared” by the incident, the 14-year-old took her own photo of the taped iPhone.

An FBI agent later informed the parents that the flight attendant was not arrested because they couldn’t find any incriminating evidence on his phone.

The lawsuit against American Airlines and the flight attendant, whose identity remains unknown, was filed in U.S. district court in North Carolina.
